It happened again. I was given a last minute offer that would require me to cancel a show, last minute. I did not know what to do. The new opportunity was a much greater one than the one I had to cancel, but if I cancelled, my thoughts are that I would jeopardize my relationship with the club and a comedian who I was working with. As a person who hates cancelling anything and also hates when people cancel on me, I did not want to put the club in that position. I also did not know if that would be me in hot water with them and the comedian.
I did not know what to do so initially I decided to not to take it. Then I mentioned it to someone at the club who I was afraid to cancel on and they essentially said I was crazy not to take the new opportunity. Clearly, they want me to get new opportunities as they are on my team! So I reached out to the new offer and it was too late; they found a replacement. In hindsight, I should have contacted the club and felt out the temperature on if I cancelled. Times like this, I wish I had management to guide me through the decision making tree. Creatives complain about the percentages that are paid to managers but I would love to give someone 10% or 20% to navigate these waters.
