Comedians hate doing "bios" on themselves. We like to think we are unique and nobody is like us! While we often are asked to send a biography to clubs and venues for people to see when they are thinking about coming to a show, I suppose. I try to update mine ever few months after I discovered a bio I was sending had my credits from 10 years ago!
I recently had to describe my comedy in 3 words and I came up with quick-witted, smart and personal. I said quick-witted because I react in moments, I believe, faster than most. Perhaps its from having to respond to bullys as a kid with something funny or my years as a trial lawyer, having to respond and adjust to arguments and questions from a judge. I said smart because, well I went to law school and, on paper, that makes me pretty smart. I also have street smarts from, again, having to learn things about the real world on my own, since my immigrant parents often did not have the answers. Finally I said personal, because almost all of my material is based on my truths and vulnerable experiences. While I may do observational comedy, most of my comedy comes from my own life and when you leave a show, you know all about me, even if its a short set. Sometimes people will see me on the street and start talking to me because they think they know me from a mutual friend or from school. Then they realize they just saw me at a show. I think thats from my personal stories on stage and talking with an audience instead of at them. Hope to see you at a show soon. So much. First I would say take more chances and do the things you want to do and are interested in doing, not what your parents or friends do. My biggest regret was not pursuing the arts at a younger age. I did not learn to play the guitar until I was 19 and didn't try comedy or acting until my 30s. I was a huge fan of music and tv as a kid, raised by both radio and TV every day and night.. Growing up first generation immigrants, a job in the arts was never really an option. I was to be a doctor, a lawyer or an engineer. That's it. And anything else would be a distraction from achieving success.
In addition to education being a priority for my parents, I also was not into band or theater in high school because my friends didn't think that was cool. I was hyper-focused on being popular and doing things to fit in, since I always felt different and unlike most other mostly white kids. I would do skits and re-make music videos in the privacy of my room with my dad's video camera (I still have the tapes). I wish I was able to explore that earlier in life. And also have confidence with girls. I would also say "Ask Jen out!", one of my many crushes who I later dated hashtag#standup hashtag#comedy hashtag#advice hashtag#askmeanything First off, this is so subject and there are so many to choose from. For me, anything by the Red Hot Chili Peppers should be considered? Not a fan. If I hear Anthony Keidis’ voice on the radio, I need to change it immediately or in a public place, I need to leave or cover my ears. I am not sure when that started because when I was a kid, I loved the Chili Peppers and saw them in concert a few times. But yeah, they are my least favorite band, for certain.
Surveys have been done and “Achy Breaky Heart” by Billy Ray Cyrus and “We Built This City” by Starship seem to top most lists as does “Ice Ice Baby”, which I kinda like because it had the from my favorite song of all time, Under Pressure by Queen. But those don’t hurt my ears as much as the one song that comes to mind. That song is “You Get What You Give” by the New Radicals is my all time least favorite song. I hated the video. I hated the lyrics and everything about the song. It still bums me out when I hear it. And the video just annoyed me. I didn’t like the mannerisms of the singer and the ending was so stupid, shouting out “we’ll kick their a**es”. What the f*ck? I used to have a podcast with Marty DeRosa called “MAKE US A MIX TAPE” where we had guests do 5 song mix tapes for us and we would talk about the songs. We called ourselves music insiders, which is a nice way of saying “music snob” I suppose. When Covid happens we did themes for each other and we did different versions of bad songs (Bad songs great artists, Hits that we hated, etc). It was a fun podcast (go check it out wherever you podcast). Maybe we need to come back and do the 5 worst songs of all time for you all? Whats your least favorite song of all time? #music #musicinsider #comedy #formermusician |
